A Mexican scientist changed the way we eat food in space in 1985 and that includes cheeseburgers.

Bread and space do not go together well. In zero gravity crumbs get everywhere and getting crumbs inside mechanical equipment can cause malfunctions. Not to sound too dramatic, but bread could possibly cost lives.

But when Rodolfo Neri Vela served on a mission of the space shuttle Discovery, he brought tortillas. The perfect solution! NASA astronauts have been using them ever since.

This brings us to last week’s tweet and picture from astronaut Terry W. Virts, who is on board the International Space Station.

He tweeted out: “. Beef patties, Russian mustard, tomato paste, cheese paste, and tortilla. VERY TASTY! ”
