What is the definition of a sandwich?

Over the weekend the folks at Merriam-Webster sparked this debate by defining the HOT DOG as sandwich.

If you say a hot dog is a sandwich then you would have to say a hamburger is a sandwich as well and then that just opens the door to a whole other set of issues and fights.
