Are you worried you spend too much time on your phone? The solution…buy two phones

That’s the plan that Palm has come up with. In order to get people to use their phone LESS they want people to buy more phones. At first, this seems counterintuitive, but it may actually be a stroke of genius.

The new Palm phone is tiny and that’s the point.

Palm (same name as the ever-so-popular Palm Pilots of the early 2000s, but owned by a different company) are introducing brand new phone. It’s purpose: to make you less dependent on your smartphone. The new Palm phone doesn’t replace your current smartphone. Instead, it’s for you to use during those times you want to (mostly) unplug, but don’t want to be completely unreachable (or without a camera for a great insta-moment). When you want to ditch the distractions of your smartphone, you take your Palm phone out on the town instead.

Who is the Palm phone for?

This could work really well for a weekend out at the cottage when you want to be away from your emails, and social media, but still maybe need to call the local restaurant for delivery, or look up directions to a local hotspot. Or maybe you’re going out for a nice dinner with friends and you don’t want to the distraction of your cell phone so you can be present in the moment. This phone is perfect when you just want to pare down to the bare essentials without doing something dramatic like tossing your phone in a river after getting a work-related email on your personal device during your evening Netflix-and-chill.

The Palm phone’s strap allows you to wear the device around your wrist or neck.

The Palm has a 3.3 inch screen, which makes it a TINY phone (a little bigger than a credit card). This makes it convenient for throwing in your bag or pocket and forgetting all about it (which is the point of this phone). The device runs on Android, so you can choose the most essential apps you need (internet browser, music player, etc.) and leave the distracting ones (Facebook, Outlook, etc.) on your main device.

This phone can sub in great for activities that might damage your main phone.

The downside (at least at this point) seems to be the new Palm phone can only be activated as a second line for Verizon customers. So unless you live in the USA and are a Verizon customer you won’t get to try this out. Hopefully that changes, and more people, including us Canadians, can enjoy the freedom of (relatively) unplugging with the new Palm phone.
