Starring Jacob Tremblay and directed by Jake Schreier, the music video managed to accumulate over 8 million views within the first 48 hours.  Rocking his signature purple hoodie and side swept bangs, Jacob says“It definitely feels really weird to say it, because it just sounds like it shouldn’t be happening but, I am in a Justin Bieber music video, which is something I would have never seen coming.”

Jacob then explained how he was nervous about starring in Justin’s video, “I’ve always played made-up characters, so I just really wanted to make sure that I had the feelings of the song and how Justin wanted me to feel,” he continued. “I really got to understand — it’s a bit more of a serious song but I’m really excited for people to hear it, so they can see the story. It’s really good.”

Jacob then explained how he landed the role as young Biebs, “We kind of organized that we would call each other some time, but we didn’t really get an exact time, so he ended up calling me when I was in the grocery store… I was like, to my parents, ‘I have to go outside because Justin Bieber’s calling me.’”

To promote both his new song and video, Justin writes, “‘Lonely’ is out now with Benny Blanco.  When he and Finneas showed me this song to be honest it was hard to listen to considering how tough it was to get through some of these chapters.  I went into the studio and sang through it which wasn’t easy but started to really see the importance of telling this story! It made me realize we all feel lonely at times! Being someone in my position I believe it is powerful to express vulnerability and that’s why I believe this song is so powerful! And Jacob Tremblay is so talented.  It was emotional to see him play me from the outside looking in.”

Talking about his new collaboration, Benny Blanco shares:

“He was real nervous. He was like, ‘S—. Should I be putting this out into the world?’ Because he’s like, ‘People know me for this thing and it’s like I’ve never been this raw.’  He’s raw on this song. This song brought us so much closer together. And it was just he’s really opening up on this and he’s super vulnerable.  We were just talking about we all play this Superman every day,” he continued. “I’m sure you do for your family, for your friends, and everyone’s counting on you for so many things. You do a lot of stuff for a lot of people and sometimes you get f—ed up. I know for sure it doesn’t matter. You do. I do. We all do. And why do you have to be this superhero? Why can’t you be like one of your kids for a second and be like, ‘I don’t want to do. I just want to cry. I just want to be sad.’ There’s this weird stigma and this thing where men are supposed to be this. And it’s like, ‘No, I want to be vulnerable. I want to cry. I want to have a good cry.'”
