How should you pop the question?

After more than 12 years together, my girlfriend and I are finally engaged. This has been a long time coming. My girlfriend (no wait, I guess fiance now) must have felt like it was a long time to wait for a proposal because she was the one who ended up proposing to me!

The Proposal

It was a very beautiful proposal, she had the house lit with candles, rose petals scattered, and a series of messages written out with all the things she wanted to say leading up to the proposal. Once the proposal was finished and I said yes, I ran upstairs, grabbed the engagement ring I already had for months, and then got down on one knee and gave it to her. It was funny because I didn’t know which hand/finger it goes on, so I just held out the ring until she finally held out the right one.

The Engagement Tokens

I had a pearl engagement ring picked out for my girlfriend. I had found out YEARS ago that was what she wanted, but after searching for many months I couldn’t find one that was quite right. Eventually I found the absolute perfect ring (style, symbolism, everything). Since my girlfriend was the one doing the asking, she needed to have some kind of engagement token. Rather than a ring though, she had picked out a beautiful guitar for me. I now have a Gibson acoustic guitar (the first Gibson an important milestone for any musician) and it was the perfect memento for the occasion.

Alternative Scenarios

Over the 12+ years we had together I had many ideas of how to propose. I really liked the idea of proposing during the fireworks show at Disney World because we both love Disney and once you see that fireworks show you realize it is like none other…truly magic! I also contemplated a proposal last Christmas by digitally editing my proposal into the ending credits of Mickey’s Christmas Carol. In the end, my girlfriend planned the perfect proposal, so I didn’t have to worry about the planning and worry and secrets that go along with a marriage proposal.

If you’re married or engaged, how did your proposal go? If you’re not, have you thought about what the perfect proposal might look like for you? Be sure and let us know! Maybe your idea will inspire someone else like me who couldn’t figure out the perfect way to do it, so they ended up stalling for years!
